Christianity resists evolution, consciously or unconsciously, because it is based on the premise that we are all descendants of an Adam and Eve who lived in a Garden of Eden and that we inherited their Original Sin.

Great article!! Like how Dr. Kirby traces the societal flip-flopping on the evolution issue, and touches on the way Christian lobbies influence the arbiters of the silver screen. I wonder if many religious people's discomfort with depictions of evolution coincide with a kind of Victorian fear of wild nature. I guess, for them, evolution makes of us animals whereas creation eventually makes us all angels. Or most of us. Raymond

I've heard that Creation has since found a US Distributor. Does anyone know if this is the case? In what cities and types of theaters will it be shown? Could the depiction of Darwin's personal struggles be a useful "missing link" in the dialog between faith and scientific communities? Or are we likely to see the same polarizations of the past (Darwin=bad, religion=good / Darwin=good, religion=bad). Would love to know if any church groups are using this film for discussions, particular on the topic of bereavement.

Very interesting post! This focus on evolution as necessarily monstrous also is reflected in the popular trope of the "missing link," a being somehow poised between man and ape. A typical narrative of evolution involves "finding" this link within one creature that straddles the boundaries between human and animal. The "missing link" has also been associated with other hybrid monsters such as the yeti in popular television and cinema.
